Questions:

Tell us the first time putting together a cosplay piece.

The very first time I cosplayed, my mom actually helped me sew my first dress! We went to Joanne’s to pick out fabric together, and she helped me modify an old 1960’s dress pattern to better fit the character (it was Dr. Girlfriend from The Venture Bros). The most difficult part was the hat, but I found an awesome pillbox hat tutorial online, and it turned out surprisingly cute! I had so much fun cosplaying, when I got home from the convention, I was already planning my next cosplay.

What are the types of characters you’re drawn to cosplaying as?

I think my favorite cosplays are gender bends - I’m always drawn to super tough male characters, especially villains or anti-heroes. I love being able to alter the character design a little bit to make it more feminine (but still bad ass). For some reason, I feel way more confident cosplaying feminized versions of male characters vs. female characters. Plus, I love making giant props.

What do you want to achieve through cosplaying?

At the end of the day, I cosplay for the community. I’ve made so many friends through cosplay - it’s an awesome way to meet other nerds with the same weird interests as me. The first time I cosplayed, I definitely wasn’t planning on cosplaying long-term, but I made so many friends at that convention that I’m still friends with seven years later! Getting recognition is great and all, but what keeps me going is the positivity and support I’ve received from other cosplayers <3
